What Happens to Your File
OxnaPDF inspects your document in browser memory against eight machine-verifiable ISO 14289-1 (PDF/UA-1) checks: XMP pdfuaid:part=1 identification, /MarkInfo /Marked true, /StructTreeRoot semantic tag tree, /ParentTree marked-content index, Document /Title, /ViewerPreferences /DisplayDocTitle true, primary /Lang tag, and page /Tabs /S structure tab order.
For untagged text PDFs, the local engine wraps page text blocks and image XObjects in marked-content sequences (BDC/EMC) and builds a semantic structure tree (/Document, /Sect, /H1, /H2, /P and /Figure with /Alt descriptions). For already-tagged PDFs, it preserves your existing tag tree while repairing missing /RoleMap entries, missing figure /Alt descriptions, table header /Scope attributes and required catalog/XMP metadata.
Limits
- Accepts unencrypted, unsigned PDFs up to 100 MB; password-protected, digitally signed and dynamic XFA form PDFs are refused.
- Image-only scanned PDFs with no selectable text cannot be auto-tagged directly; run Searchable PDF (OCR) first to add a text layer.
- Prepares machine-verifiable PDF/UA-1 structure and metadata; human review is still recommended to verify complex multi-column reading order, colour contrast and descriptive figure alt text.
Good to Know
- Unlike visual PDF/A-2b archiving (which rasterises pages into images), PDF/UA-1 preserves selectable text, bookmarks, links, form fields and semantic tags so screen readers can navigate the document.
- Every page is updated with /Tabs /S so keyboard Tab focus follows the semantic structure tree rather than raw page coordinates.
- If your PDF is a camera scan or photocopy, run Searchable PDF (OCR) first, then open the searchable copy in PDF to PDF/UA.
Questions
- What Is PDF/UA (ISO 14289-1)?
- PDF/UA stands for Universal Accessibility, the international ISO standard for tagged, accessible PDFs that work reliably with screen readers, braille displays and keyboard navigation.
- How Does PDF to PDF/UA Differ From PDF to PDF/A?
- PDF/UA preserves selectable text and adds semantic structure tags for assistive technology, whereas OxnaPDF's PDF/A-2b tool creates an image-only visual archival copy.
- Can It Auto-Tag an Untagged PDF?
- Yes, if the PDF contains selectable text, the engine automatically groups text blocks and images into headings, paragraphs and figures inside a valid /StructTreeRoot.
- What If My PDF Is a Scanned Image?
- Run Searchable PDF (OCR) first so your pages have selectable text, then run PDF to PDF/UA to tag the recognised text.
- Does Preparing a PDF/UA Copy Upload My Document?
- No, all structure inspection, auto-tagging and XMP metadata writing happen locally inside your browser.
